Khetag's grove

Khetag's Grove is a protected forest area near the village of Suadag, covering roughly 13 hectares of land. The site is filled with dense clusters of ash and beech trees that grow up the slopes, creating a natural woodland structure.

This forest received official protection status in 1994, safeguarding a location tied to old regional stories. The site is linked to a prince from the distant past through local tales that have been passed down through generations.

The grove is named after a legendary prince from regional folklore, and locals speak of a deep connection between this forest and the surrounding mountains. Visitors can witness community gatherings here during summer months where people come together to honor traditions.

The grove sits along the Ossetian Military Road and is easily reached from the town of Alagir. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the forest area is hilly and paths follow natural terrain.

The site is known for an unusual natural occurrence where trees supposedly descended from the mountain slopes to shelter a refugee, according to local narratives. This legend gives the forest an extraordinary story that sets it apart from other protected woodlands.
