Dzivgis Cave Fortress

Dzivgis Cave Fortress is a castle built into multiple cave chambers within rock formations along a mountainside, creating a multi-level defensive structure that stretches several hundred meters. The design integrates natural stone features with constructed fortifications to form a unified defensive system.

This fortress developed during medieval times as a protective structure for local communities in a strategically important mountain region. It held central importance for securing trade routes that passed through the Caucasus Mountains.

The fortress reflects how local people incorporated natural caves into their way of life, creating spaces that still bear the marks of their medieval defensive practices.

The site contains four separate defensive levels connected by hidden passages, with each level featuring its own water collection system and storage areas for supplies. This carefully designed infrastructure allowed residents to withstand long sieges.
