Alan Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Orthodox monastery in Hidikus, Russia
The Alan Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the village of Khidikus, set in the Kurtat Valley in North Ossetia-Alania, Russia. It consists of several religious buildings with domed roofs built close together within a narrow mountain valley.
The monastery was founded at the start of the 21st century and belongs to the Diocese of Vladikavkaz. Its founding was one of the first steps toward rebuilding monastic life in North Ossetia after the Soviet period.
The monastery takes its name from the Alans, an ancient people whose descendants still live in North Ossetia today. Visitors attending services can see how Orthodox worship and local identity are woven together in everyday religious life here.
The monastery is reached by the road that runs through the Kurtat Valley toward Khidikus and is generally walkable from the village center. Visitors are welcome to attend services but should dress modestly before entering any of the buildings.
Although the monastery was founded recently, it is one of very few active male monasteries across the North Caucasus as a whole. Its position deep in the Kurtat Valley means it can be cut off by snow and mountain roads in winter, which shapes the daily rhythm of the community living there.
