School No. 49

School No. 49 is a three-story educational building located at the corner of Maxim Gorky Street and Gazetny Lane in central Rostov-on-Don. The facades are asymmetrically arranged with rounded corner volumes and Ionic pilasters defining the exterior.

The building was constructed in 1910 as the A.A. Filipieva Gymnasium and originally served the upper classes in education. During the Soviet period it underwent several name changes before becoming known as School No. 49.

Two memorial plaques on the front wall honor distinguished graduates who became prominent Russian scientists in their fields. These tributes show how the building has shaped academic success over many decades.

The school sits at a prominent corner intersection making it easy to locate in the city center. The surrounding walkways provide clear views of the building from multiple angles.

A corner of the building bears a monogram of Empress Maria Feodorovna, a rare detail from its original construction period. Some of the bricks have glazed surfaces giving the structure an unusual sonic quality.
