Kassala

Kassala is a trade city in eastern Sudan nestled in a river valley and surrounded by mountains to its east and south. The city functions as a major market and trade hub for the entire region.

The city was established by Egyptian military forces in 1834 and later experienced rule by various powers, including Italian occupation in the 1940s. This shifting history shaped the city's development and its connections to neighboring lands.

The old quarters show Egyptian and Arab architectural styles in their narrow streets and traditional house designs. Walking through the busy market areas lets visitors experience these cultural layers directly.
