Tyresö Municipality, municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden
Tyresö Municipality is a municipality in Stockholm located in eastern Sweden along the Baltic Sea coast, comprising mainly residential areas, forests, and several lakes. The main town of Bollmora features apartment buildings and small houses lining tree-lined streets with shops and cafes, while the landscape of gentle hills and valleys was shaped by the last ice age.
The earliest traces of human settlement in Tyresö date back roughly 3000 years and appear as graves and tools scattered throughout the area. The region later became an important industrial center between the 1500s and 1800s, when watermills powered by streams drove production of millstones, paper, and bricks, with those waterwheels still featured on the municipal coat of arms today.
Tyresö has a friendly and welcoming community where residents gather regularly at local events and celebrations throughout the year. Family life shapes the area, with parks, schools, and clubs that bring people together and foster a strong sense of belonging.
Tyresö is mainly accessible by bus since there are no train lines serving the area. Buses connect the municipality to Stockholm and surrounding towns, making it easy for residents and visitors to travel for work, shopping, or local activities.
Within Tyresö Municipality stand historic watermills from earlier centuries, one of which burned down in the 1800s, yet a small hydroelectric power station was built in its place and continues operating today. This industrial site shows how the area preserved its past while adapting to modern energy needs.
