Foteviken Museum, Open-air Viking museum in Höllviken, Sweden.
Foteviken Museum is an open-air museum on the Höllviken peninsula with roughly 23 reconstructed buildings spread across coastal terrain. The structures show how people lived during the Viking period, with dwellings, workshops, and other everyday buildings.
The museum grew from archaeological studies of Viking ships in Foteviken Bay and research into the Battle of Fotevik in 1134. The reconstructions are based on findings from these excavations and local historical records.
The name derives from Viking ships discovered in the nearby bay. Visitors can watch how craftspeople work using traditional techniques and see how the reconstructed buildings are actively used throughout the seasons.
The museum grounds are an open area you can explore freely, with paved paths connecting the buildings. There are shaded areas under trees and windswept coastal sections, so prepare for changing weather and wear sturdy shoes.
The museum hosts an annual international Viking assembly at its Tinghöll building, drawing participants from several countries. These gatherings blend historical traditions with modern exchange and are a rare example of large-scale Viking reconstruction brought to life.
