Fryken, Chain of lakes in Värmland, Sweden
Fryken is a connected lake system in Värmland with three main sections called Upper Fryken, Middle Fryken, and Lower Fryken, reaching depths of more than 100 meters in places. These waters stretch for many kilometers and form a cohesive landscape of bays, forested shores, and small settlements dotting the coastlines.
The lake system played a key role in the region's timber industry, with logs transported on the waters from the 18th century onward. These waterways connected remote forest areas to trade routes and shaped economic activity across Värmland for generations.
Selma Lagerlöf, a Swedish writer and Nobel Prize winner, had strong ties to this region and set some of her works here. The lakes have long inspired local artists and writers who found creative energy in the landscape and its people.
Visitors can use the lakes for fishing, swimming, or boating depending on the season and water conditions. Fishing in protected areas requires special permissions, so it is helpful to check local regulations before planning a visit.
Two narrow waterways called Sunnesundet and Nilsbysundet connect the three lake sections and create a continuous water passage from one end to the other. These natural channels give the system its distinctive character and allow boaters to explore the entire length without leaving the water.
