Runkesten, Rumskulla, Rocking stone in Rumskulla, Sweden.
Runkesten is a massive glacial boulder positioned in the forest between Rumskulla and Mariannelund. The stone measures approximately 6.5 meters in length, 5.5 meters in width, and 4 meters in height.
The boulder was transported southward during the last Ice Age approximately 12,000 years ago through glacial movements and deposited in its current location. This geological process shaped the landscape over vast periods of time.
Local stories connect the stone to a giantess named Kåra, who according to tradition threw it in anger at the sound of Rumskulla church bells. This tale remains a central part of how visitors understand and relate to the place.
A marked hiking trail of approximately 600 meters connects the gravel parking area along Mariannelundsvägen to the stone. The path passes through woodland and is straightforward to follow.
This boulder ranks among the world's largest movable rocks and can be rocked back and forth by human force. Despite its enormous weight, its shape allows gentle movement with minimal effort.
