Polar Studios, Recording studio in Stockholm, Sweden
Polar Studios was a recording studio in central Stockholm located within a converted cinema space in the Sportpalatset building. The facility had two sections: one equipped with analog tape machines and another with digital equipment for diverse recording needs.
The studio was founded in 1978 by ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson along with their manager Stig Anderson. After 26 years of successful operations, the facility closed in 2004.
The studio gained fame for recording multiple ABBA albums and attracted international artists like Led Zeppelin, Genesis, and Roxette. This mix of different musicians made it an important meeting place for recording professionals in Scandinavia.
The studio was housed in the Sportpalatset building, a central location in Stockholm that was easily accessible on foot. It's important to note that the facility is now closed and can only be viewed from the exterior.
In 1981, the facility acquired a modern 3M digital recorder, and ABBA's album The Visitors became the first major project recorded using this new technology. This marked a turning point as digital recording methods were still relatively new at the time.
