Gömmaren Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Stockholm, Sweden
Gömmaren Nature Reserve is a woodland area south of Stockholm covering approximately 765 hectares of forests, lakes, narrow valleys, and boggy areas. The terrain changes often between dense woods and more open landscapes with fields and wetlands.
The area was protected in 1998 after centuries of human settlement and activity. In the 17th century, homesteads, charcoal production sites, and windmills operated across the landscape.
The name reflects centuries of human presence in the landscape, with the terrain showing traces of how people once lived and worked here. Walking through the reserve today reveals how local communities shaped the land over generations.
The reserve has many paths for walking and exploring different areas at your own pace. Designated swimming beaches and fishing spots are available, and the frozen lakes offer ice skating in winter.
The Fullersta kvarn area harbors rare moss species and received Natura 2000 protection status for its botanical importance. This designation recognizes the ecological value of this part of the reserve within a European conservation framework.
