Simhallsbadet, Malmö, Sports hall and water park in Malmö, Sweden
Simhallsbadet is a sports hall and water park in Malmö, Sweden, built around both a 25-meter and a 50-meter pool. The site also includes areas for leisure swimming alongside the competitive facilities.
The facility opened in March 1956 with a 25-meter pool and added a 50-meter pool in 1977. That second pool turned the venue into a place capable of hosting international swimming competitions.
The facility was known as Aq-va-kul from 1988 to 2015, a name mixing Latin and Swedish words to express the joy of being in water. The name gave the place a playful identity that set it apart from a standard sports venue.
The site sits in a central part of Malmö and is easy to reach by bus. It tends to get busier when swimming clubs hold training sessions, so visiting outside those peak times makes for a more comfortable experience.
In January 1997, a European record in the men's 800-meter freestyle was set in the 25-meter pool during a FINA World Cup event. It is unusual for a record of that level to be set in a shorter pool rather than a standard 50-meter one.
