Östgötateatern, Regional theatre in Norrköping, Sweden
Östgötateatern is a regional theatre in Norrköping, Sweden, housed in two Art Nouveau buildings and featuring a main stage alongside the smaller experimental space called X-scenen. The two spaces allow the venue to host a wide range of production formats, from classic plays to contemporary performances.
The theatre grew out of a long tradition of professional theatre in the Östergötland region and was reorganised several times over the decades. In 2016 it was folded into Scenkonst Öst, a new body that brought it together with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under one roof.
The theatre has a permanent ensemble that works alongside guest artists, giving each season a shifting feel. The smaller X-scenen space tends to draw a different crowd than the main stage, often presenting more experimental work.
The theatre sits in central Norrköping and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city centre. Those planning to attend more than one show should check the schedules for both spaces in advance, as the programming can differ considerably between the main stage and X-scenen.
The two Art Nouveau buildings that house the theatre were not originally built for stage performances, which has shaped how the spaces are used to this day. This gives the venue a different feel from purpose-built theatres.
