Asecs, Shopping mall in Jönköping, Sweden.
Asecs is a shopping complex in Jönköping, Sweden, built on both sides of the E4 motorway and connected by a covered bridge that itself contains shops. The two building sections face each other across the road, linked by this passage so visitors can cross from one side to the other without going outside.
The site once belonged to the Småland Artillery Regiment and was converted into a retail complex after the regiment left, opening in 1987. The military past of the grounds is barely visible today, but it explains the unusual shape and position of the buildings relative to the motorway.
The center was known as A6 for decades, a name that many locals still use today out of habit. The name Asecs, adopted in 2017, is the official one, but older residents often refer to the place by its former name when giving directions.
The complex is easiest to reach by car, with parking available on both sides of the E4. If you plan to visit shops on both sides, use the covered bridge passage to move between sections without going back outside.
Until 2019, a McDonald's occupied the bridge section of the complex, with windows looking directly down onto the E4 traffic below. It was one of the few places in Sweden where you could eat a meal while watching motorway traffic pass beneath your feet.
