Esperanto, Michelin star restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden
Esperanto was a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Vasastan district of Stockholm, combining Swedish and Japanese cooking techniques. It offered multi-course tasting menus built around seasonal ingredients.
The restaurant opened in November 2005 under chef Sayan Isaksson and held Michelin recognition for most of its run. It closed in the summer of 2018.
The restaurant was known for having an all-female front-of-house team, which was rare in fine dining at the time. This choice was noticed and talked about by guests and professionals alike.
The restaurant was in Vasastan, close to Tekniska Högskolan subway station, and easy to reach by public transport. Reservations needed to be made well in advance, as the tasting menu format drew consistent demand.
Although the name calls to mind the international constructed language, it had no direct connection to it, and instead pointed to the idea of bringing two distant culinary traditions together in a single menu. This concept drew guests who were looking for something different from classic Nordic cooking.
