Galgberget, Södermalm, Historical execution hill in Södermalm, Sweden
Galgberget rises above Södermalm district, offering views across Stockholm and featuring stone foundations from its former structures.
During the 1500s and 1600s, this hill served as Stockholm's primary execution site with a permanent gallows visible from many parts of the city.
The hill's dark past influenced local street names, with nearby Fjällgatan originally being called Galgebergs gattan in reference to the executions.
The location now houses the Ersta Sköndal University College, constructed in 1907 on the exact spot where the gallows once stood.
The gallows at this site appeared on numerous nautical charts from the 1500s and 1600s as a navigation marker for ships.
