Hovförvaltningens hus, Administrative building near Stockholm Palace, Sweden
Hovförvaltningens hus is a stone building with baroque style elements situated directly opposite Stockholm Palace in the Old Town. The tall fire wall facing the Finnish Church gives the structure a distinctive presence along the narrow streets of Gamla Stan.
Construction took place between 1911 and 1912 following designs by architect Erik Josephson, replacing the former Indebetou House on the same site. This replacement marked a shift in the area as older structures gave way to modern administrative needs of the Royal Court.
The building houses apartments for members of the Royal Court, maintaining its role as a residence for people who work in royal administrative functions. Its location on Slottsbacken reflects the historical importance of this street as the heart of Stockholm's power and governance.
The building sits at Slottsbacken 2 in the Old Town and is easily accessible by public transportation. This location works well for a walking tour of the narrow streets of Gamla Stan, where visitors can explore other royal and historical sites nearby.
When the building was completed, critics raised concerns about its height and positioning, finding it too dominant compared to the nearby Parliament House. These early objections reveal how seriously Stockholm residents cared about the design of structures in the historic center.
