Rappska huset, Jugendstil building in Luthagen, Uppsala, Sweden.
Rappska huset was a stone Jugendstil building located at the corner of Sysslomansgatan and Skolgatan in the Luthagen area. The house combined residential and commercial spaces while displaying the architectural language of the early twentieth century with its decorative design details.
Master shoemaker Rapp commissioned the house from city architect Carl Axel Ekholm, and it replaced a wooden villa from 1868. The building stood until 1964, when it was demolished.
This house in Luthagen marked a turning point in how Uppsala rebuilt itself architecturally. Residents and visitors could see the shift happening as traditional wooden buildings gave way to modern stone structures throughout the neighborhood.
The location at an important street corner made the house a reference point in the Luthagen neighborhood. Today visitors can understand the building's location and layout through historical photographs of the site.
Photographer Alfred Dahlgren captured the house in 1901 and 1908, creating a visual record of Uppsala's architectural transformation. These photographs remain the only surviving visual evidence of this Jugendstil house's design and details.
