Renströmska sjukhuset, Former tuberculosis hospital in Gothenburg Municipality, Sweden
Renströmska sjukhuset is a former tuberculosis hospital whose main building features symmetrical design with multiple wings and expansive windows. The structure sits on elevated ground and includes extensive green areas that were part of its original layout.
The facility was founded in 1913, financed by merchant Sven Renström's foundation to address tuberculosis in Gothenburg. From its inception, it was designed to support emerging approaches to medical care.
The building reflects ideas about nature's role in healing practices. The gardens and green spaces surrounding the main structure were considered an integral part of how patients recovered.
The building was converted into residential apartments in 2008 while preserving its original architectural features. Visitors can view the exterior and grounds, though the structure is now private residential space.
Swedish writer Harry Martinsson spent recovery time here and used the extensive park grounds during his stay. His visit shows how notable cultural figures benefited from the facility's setting.
