University Hall, Renaissance educational complex in Uppsala, Sweden
The University Hall features Italian Renaissance Beaux-Arts architecture with a grand foyer, decorated with ornate cupolas and an auditorium seating 1800 persons.
King Oscar II laid the cornerstone in 1879 on the site of a former academic riding stable, and architect Herman Teodor Holmgren completed the building in 1887.
The Grand Auditorium entrance displays philosopher Thomas Thorild's inscription advocating the importance of free and proper thinking in academic pursuits.
The building contains seven conference rooms, accessibility features for reduced mobility, and specific arrangements for academic ceremonies throughout the year.
During initial construction, workers discovered foundations of the 14th-century Archbishop's Castle, which required significant alterations to the building plans.
