Vinterpalatset, Movie theater in Stockholm, Sweden
Vinterpalatset is a movie theater in central Stockholm, housed inside a round building with a large dome that was originally built as a gas storage tank. The auditorium seats close to 1,950 people, making it one of the largest cinema halls in the city.
The building opened in 1914 under the name Auditorium, after the city converted an old gas tank into a public venue. Over the following decades it changed its use several times before settling into its role as a cinema.
The name Vinterpalatset means "Winter Palace" in Swedish, a name the venue earned during its years as a dance hall in the 1940s. The circular shape of the room is still visible today and gives the cinema a different feel compared to a standard movie theater.
The cinema sits in central Stockholm and is easy to reach by public transport. The auditorium is very large and round, so arriving a few minutes early gives you time to find your seat without rushing.
In 1958, the auditorium was fitted with Cinemiracle technology, a widescreen system that uses three synchronized projectors to fill a curved screen. This technology was used in only a handful of cinemas across Europe at the time.
