Vinterpalatset, Movie theater in Stockholm, Sweden
Vinterpalatset is a movie theater in a circular building with a 32-meter dome, originally constructed as a storage tank for the Klara gas works. The auditorium holds approximately 1,950 seats and was upgraded with Cinemiracle technology in 1958.
The building opened in 1914 as the Auditorium, created by converting a gas storage tank to serve as a venue for the 1912 Olympic Games preparation. This transformation gave Stockholm a new performance space.
The theater served as the main hall for the Stockholm Concert Association until 1926, hosting musical performances alongside film screenings in its circular space. Visitors today can still experience the acoustic qualities that made it suitable for both types of entertainment.
The theater is centrally located in Stockholm and easily accessible by public transportation. The large circular auditorium can have some dimly lit areas in the back section, so arriving early to locate your seats is advisable.
From 1943 to 1950, Vinterpalatset operated as a dance hall with two orchestras performing at the same time on Stockholm's largest dance floor. This period marked a complete change in how the space was used before returning to cinema.
