Ytterby gamla kyrka

Ytterby Old Church is a historic church ruin in Kungalv, Sweden, with surviving stone walls from the 1100s standing near the Nordre River. The remaining structure displays medieval architectural details and fragments of the original building.

The church was built in the 1100s and dedicated to Saint Hallvard, serving as a parish center until 1870. A new church was then constructed to take over its religious functions, leaving the old structure behind.

Two wooden processional crucifixes from the 1400s and a medieval altar cloth show how the local community expressed its faith through handcrafted religious objects. These pieces reveal the artistic traditions that shaped worship in this region during medieval times.

The ruins are accessible throughout the year without special requirements for exploring. Regular maintenance work ensures the walls remain stable and safe for visitors to view and photograph.

A stone embedded in the northwest corner displays two carved human heads representing Saint Hallvard and a woman he attempted to rescue. This carving serves as a rare visual record of a local story that extends beyond the church itself.
