Ytterby gamla kyrka

The stone walls of Ytterby Old Church stand against the Nordic sky near the Nordre River, retaining sections of its original 12th-century architecture.

Built in the 1100s and dedicated to Saint Hallvard, the church served as a parish center until 1870 when a new church replaced its religious functions.

Two wooden processional crucifixes from the 1400s and a medieval altar cloth demonstrate the religious art traditions of the medieval Swedish church.

The church ruins remain accessible throughout the year, with conservation work performed periodically to maintain the structural integrity of the remaining walls.

A stone embedded in the northwest corner displays two carved human heads, representing Saint Hallvard and the woman he attempted to rescue.
