Villa Ellesbo, Historical mansion in Rödbo district, Gothenburg Municipality, Sweden
Villa Ellesbo is a mansion built with Italian-style architecture on Hisingen in Gothenburg Municipality. The terraced grounds slope toward the Göta River, connecting the main house to garden areas that hold fountains, ponds, and centuries-old trees.
Architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg designed this mansion in 1795 for country accountant Fredrik Magnus Ackerman, drawing on current Swedish residential styles. The property remained in private hands for generations, becoming part of the region's long-standing estates.
The name refers to the waterway and the location on Hisingen island. Visitors today can see how the gardens were designed to frame views of the river landscape, blending the residence with nature through careful placement of paths and planted areas.
Access is via Ellesbovägen on Hisingen, where the main building, gates, fountain, and garden areas are located. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terraced grounds require walking up and down slopes.
The garden holds several giant oak trees that are many centuries old, having been full grown when the mansion was built in 1795. These ancient specimens anchor the landscape and give the grounds a sense of deep time.
