Ljubljana Castle, Medieval castle on Castle Hill, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Ljubljana Castle is a stone fortress sitting on a green hill above downtown Ljubljana, featuring defensive walls, towers, and courtyards that define the cityscape. The complex is crowned by a distinctive outlook tower offering views across the entire city and surrounding areas.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 12th century, then served from the 14th century as the seat of Carniola's rulers. It remained a seat of regional power until the 19th century.

The castle houses exhibitions about Slovenian history and a puppet museum with Gothic and Baroque architectural details you can observe. These collections show how the region preserves and shares its past with visitors.

You can reach the castle by funicular railway or walking paths, with each option offering different levels of effort to get there. On site you will find restaurants, cafes, and shops to make your visit comfortable.

The Tower of Erasmus commemorates Erazem Lueger, who managed a remarkable escape from the castle during a medieval siege. This dramatic event from centuries past continues to capture local imagination today.

Stairs: historic, architectural, monumental

Stairs serve not only to overcome elevation changes but often rank among the notable structures of their cities. The Spanish Steps in Rome with its 135 steps has connected two districts since 1725 and became a meeting point for locals and visitors. In Montmartre, 222 steps lead to the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, while Jacob's Ladder on Saint Helena with 699 steps forms one of the longest straight stairways in the world. The selection includes various construction types: spiral staircases in medieval towers, rock-carved ascents to temples and fortresses, and modern outdoor stairs made of concrete and steel. Some stairs were built for practical reasons like the steps to Table Mountain in Cape Town, others as part of religious sites like the stairs to the Golden Rock in Myanmar. Each staircase tells the story of the engineering skills of its era and the people who use it daily.

Visit Slovenia: Alpine lakes, karst caves, and medieval castles

Slovenia covers some 7,800 square miles (20,000 square kilometers) between the Alps and the Adriatic, offering a concentration of different landscapes from the Julian Alps to the coast. The karst caves of Postojna and Škocjan rank among Europe's most extensive underground systems, while lakes such as Bled and Bohinj sit in glacial valleys. Medieval fortifications like Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face, and Ljubljana Old Town with its preserved architecture document the region's history. Triglav National Park encompasses Slovenia's highest mountain range and provides hiking routes through valleys like Soča, passes such as Vršič, and plateaus including Velika Planina. The Adriatic coastal town of Piran preserves Venetian architecture, while smaller places like Ptuj show Roman and medieval remains. Waterfalls such as Savica and Peričnik, springs like Zelenci, and gorges including Vintgar and Tolmin demonstrate the variety of Slovenian natural landscapes between mountains and Mediterranean.
