Robba Fountain, Baroque fountain at Mestni trg square, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The Robba Fountain features three male figures holding jugs that represent river gods, set within a shell-shaped basin. The entire composition sits on a layered base at the center of Town Square, combining marble and limestone in its construction.
Italian sculptor Francesco Robba created this fountain in the mid-1700s, drawing ideas from Baroque fountains he had seen in Rome. The original marble work was eventually moved to a museum for protection, while a careful copy now stands on the square.
The three river gods represent the waterways that shaped life in this region and remain central to local identity. Visitors today see how the fountain expresses the connection between people and their natural surroundings.
The square is easy to reach on foot and the fountain sits in the center where you can view it from every angle. Benches are scattered around the plaza, making it comfortable to pause and take in the surroundings.
The fountain combines three different types of stone from across Slovenia: Carrara marble for the figures, stone from Lesno Brdo for the obelisk, and local limestone for the water basin. This mix of materials tells a story about the region's resources and craftsmanship.
