Upper Carniola

Upper Carniola is a mountainous region in northwestern Slovenia that spans across the Julian Alps and Karawanks ranges. Major cities like Kranj, Kamnik, and Jesenice sit within this territory, surrounded by rivers, valleys, and forested slopes.

This region took shape in the 17th century as a distinct administrative area under Habsburg rule and formed one of three main divisions of the Duchy of Carniola. This division shaped regional structures in Slovenia for centuries to follow.

The local dialect shaped how standard Slovene developed and remains part of everyday speech in the region. You can hear this linguistic character when talking with residents or listening to local radio broadcasts.
