Migovec System, Cave system in Municipality of Tolmin, Slovenia
The Migovec System is a large cave network formed inside the limestone of Mount Tolmin Migovec in Slovenia. Several entrances at different elevations on the mountain all connect underground into a single system that reaches great depth.
Systematic exploration of the Migovec System began in the 1990s through a partnership between the Tolmin Mountaineering Club and cavers from Britain. Over the following decades, new connections between separate sections were found, each time expanding the known size of the network.
The Migovec System is closely tied to the Tolmin Mountaineering Club, which organizes regular expeditions and keeps detailed records of each new discovery. Talking to local cavers gives visitors a sense of how seriously this community takes its underground work.
Entering the Migovec System requires solid caving experience and proper equipment, and it is strongly recommended to go through the local mountaineering club before planning any visit. The entrances sit high on the mountain, so the approach itself takes time and physical effort.
Even though the Migovec System is already among the longest cave systems in the region, new passages are still found on almost every expedition. This means the total known length of the network continues to grow and is not considered final.
