Vilenica Cave

Vilenica is a show cave and archaeological site near Lokev consisting of interconnected limestone passages with natural formations throughout. The underground system features multiple chambers at different levels that visitors encounter during the guided route.

The cave was opened to visitors in the 1600s, becoming one of the earliest documented show caves in Europe. This early tourism helped establish the site as an important location for underground exploration and scientific study.

The annual literary festival brings writers and readers into the Dance Hall chamber each autumn for readings and award ceremonies. This tradition shows how the underground space serves the local community as a living cultural venue today.

The cave maintains a cool temperature throughout the year, so visitors should wear layered clothing to stay comfortable. The guided tours follow established paths through the main chambers and are accessible to people with average fitness levels.

A massive stalagmite formation in one chamber catches the eye with its remarkable height and thick base. This natural sculpture was shaped by dripping water over millennia and looks different depending on how cave lights illuminate it.
