Black Cave, Solutional cave in Municipality of Postojna, Slovenia
Black Cave is a karst formation in the Municipality of Postojna that stretches for several kilometers through limestone layers. The passages display numerous stalactites, stalagmites, and pools created by underground streams.
The cave was already known in medieval documents and was scientifically examined in the 17th century by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor. His records contributed greatly to understanding the cave's formation.
The Black Cave hosts regular guided tours in multiple languages, educating visitors about the geological processes and the endemic species within the cave system.
You should wear sturdy shoes since the paths can be slippery and good grip is important. The interior stays cold year-round, so a warm jacket is advisable.
Inside the cave sits an underground post office that lets visitors send postcards with special cave-themed stamps. This is an unusually rare experience anywhere in the world.
