Veliki Snežnik, Mountain summit in Dinaric Alps, Slovenia.
Veliki Snežnik is a 1,796-meter peak in the Dinaric Alps in southwestern Slovenia. It forms the highest point of the Snežnik limestone plateau and dominates the surrounding landscape.
The mountain served as the border between Italy and Yugoslavia from 1920 to 1947, making it strategically important during that period. This boundary role shaped its place in the region's history.
A mountain lodge sits near the peak, named after someone from the local mountaineering club who helped shape the area's climbing tradition. Hikers passing through can feel the long history of people drawn to this summit.
A marked trail starts from Sviščaki village and leads to the summit with reasonable access for hikers. The climb is best done during warmer months when conditions are more stable.
On clear days, visitors can see all the way to the Istrian coast and even the distant Marmolada peak from the top. This wide view is one reason many people make the effort to reach the summit.
