Banská Štiavnica, Historic mining town in central Slovakia

Banská Štiavnica is a town in Slovakia situated within an ancient volcanic crater and surrounded by mountains and artificial water reservoirs. The landscape displays a network of water bodies that shape the terrain and connect old mining sites with open green spaces.

The town emerged from ancient mining activity when early settlers began extracting silver in the region. Over centuries it grew into a center for mining research and technical education.

The name reflects centuries of mining work that shaped the town's identity and daily life. This heritage remains visible in how people move through the streets and gather in spaces connected to the old extractive industry.

The area can be explored on foot, with museum tours offering different views of mining history. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable since the terrain is uneven with several slopes to navigate.

The artificial lakes built between the 15th and 18th centuries originally powered mining machinery through water flow. Today these reservoirs form a calm system that shapes the landscape and creates spaces for walking.
