Banská Štiavnica, Historic mining town in central Slovakia

The town sits within a caldera formed by an ancient volcano, surrounded by the Štiavnica Mountains and numerous artificial water reservoirs.

Mining operations in Banská Štiavnica date back to the 3rd century BC when the Celts established the first settlement to extract silver ore.

The Academy of Mining, established in 1735, became the first technical university globally, advancing mining education and engineering knowledge.

Visitors can explore the open-air mining museum with guided tours available in multiple languages to learn about historical mining techniques.

A network of 60 artificial water reservoirs, constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries, previously powered mining operations and now serves recreational purposes.
