Štúrovo, town in Slovakia
Štúrovo is a town in the Nové Zámky District situated on the border between Slovakia and Hungary. It sits on the Danube River and forms a cross-border settlement pair with the Hungarian town of Esztergom.
The area was settled in medieval times and later became a trading hub on the Danube. The modern town took its current name in the 20th century to honor the Slovak language reformer.
The town is named after Ľudovít Štúr, a 19th-century Slovak writer who standardized the Slovak language. This linguistic legacy shapes the place's identity and appears in local monuments and public spaces.
The town is most easily reached by car or bus and has good connections to larger cities in the region. There is a ferry service across the Danube to Hungary available for pedestrians and vehicles.
The Danube is especially narrow here and separates Štúrovo and Esztergom, two towns in different countries that face each other like twins. This immediate proximity makes the border very tangible and personal for residents on both sides.
