Rainerova chata, Mountain refuge in Malá Studená dolina, Slovakia
Rainerova chata is a mountain hut built with stone and a wooden shingle roof standing at 1,301 meters (4,268 feet) elevation. It sits where Veľká Studená and Malá Studená valleys meet.
Johann Georg Rainer built this shelter in 1865 to accommodate visitors exploring the Zimna Woda waterfalls. This marked the beginning of organized support for hikers in the High Tatras region.
The interior displays the history of mountain porters through exhibits featuring old climbing gear and traditional equipment from the Tatras. Visitors can learn how people once navigated the steep passages that shaped mountain culture here.
The facility operates year-round with heated indoor space where hikers can rest and buy refreshments. Local products and light food are available to fuel the next leg of your mountain trek.
This is the oldest preserved mountain shelter on the southern side of the Tatras, featuring traditional oil lamps and a tiled stove. These original details show how earlier hikers were accommodated with simple furnishings.
