Vysoká

Vysoká, Mountain summit in High Tatras, Slovakia.

Tatra Spitze is a mountain summit in the High Tatras of Slovakia, sitting at around 2,547 meters (8,356 feet) above sea level. Two separate summit areas are connected by a high pass that links the main ridges of the massif.

The first recorded ascent was made on 3 September 1874 by Mór Déchy with guides Ján Ruman Driečny Jr. and Martin Spitzkopf, via the Siarkańska Pass. On 27 July 1876 a Polish party including Adam Asnyk and Tytus Chałubiński climbed from the Váha saddle. The first winter ascent followed on 11 April 1903.

The name Wysoká was recorded as 'Visoka' by Juraj Buchholtz the Younger in 1717. The German name Tatraspitze and the Hungarian Tátra-csúcs were later coined from Slovak poetry, notably Hviezdoslav's 'Sne o Kriváni'. The ridge between Wysoká and Bartková Turnia is called Rumanov hrebeň after the guide Ján Ruman Driečny.

The summit lies within the Bielovodská dolina and Mengusovská dolina national nature reserves, so access is only permitted with a certified mountain guide. There is no marked hiking trail to the top. The northern face, about 500 metres high, is a frequent goal for climbing routes, especially in winter.

The summit lies entirely on the Slovak side of the main ridge, not on the Polish border, so climbers do not cross between countries here. The higher of the two tops is the south-eastern one, by about 25 cm, and the saddle between them, Štrbina vo Vysokej, drops roughly 22 m. A steel cross stands on the north-western top, carried up in 1955 by hut keepers Oldřich Bublík and Miroslav Jílek in memory of climber Václav Raif, whose initials VR are on it.
