Chata pri Zelenom plese, Mountain hut in High Tatras, Slovakia
Chata pri Zelenom plese is a stone mountain hut in the High Tatras of Slovakia, sitting at around 1551 meters (5,089 feet) beside a naturally green mountain lake. It offers sleeping space in shared dormitory rooms, a dining area, and bathroom facilities for both overnight guests and day visitors.
The hut was built in 1897 by the Hungarian Carpathian Society, which was developing early mountain tourism in the region. Fires in the 1920s damaged the original structure, and after reconstruction it took on the form it has today.
The name of the hut comes directly from the green mountain lake sitting just below it. Hikers from across Europe stop here to rest, share meals made from regional ingredients, and exchange stories from the trails around them.
Booking a bed in advance is strongly recommended since the sleeping rooms fill up fast during the main hiking season. Mountain weather can change without warning, so bring warm layers and rain protection regardless of how the morning looks.
The hut acts as a base for mountain rescue teams covering the surrounding peaks and valleys. This means trained rescue personnel and emergency equipment are always present on site, which is something most visitors do not think about when they stop for a meal or a night's sleep.
