Lomnický Štít Observatory, Scientific observatory in High Tatras, Slovakia

Lomnický Štít Observatory sits atop the mountain of the same name in the High Tatras at 2,632 meters elevation. The facility contains modern instruments designed to observe the sun and measure cosmic rays reaching Earth.

The Slovak Academy of Sciences established this mountain research station in 1962 after five years of construction work at the site. Building began during the International Geophysical Year and marked the start of systematic solar research from this peak.

The site represents a blend of mountain exploration and scientific pursuit that defines how locals view their high peaks. Today, visitors experience how research and geography have merged into a single destination for learning about the sun and space.

Access is by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, which provides a safe and reliable way to reach the summit. Guided tours run during warmer months when weather conditions at the top remain stable enough for visits.

The station operates a special solar observer made by ZEISS and a neutron measurement device that have tracked solar eruptions continuously since the 1980s. This dual system for watching both the sun and cosmic particles makes the location a rare combination at this elevation.
