Saint James's Chapel, Romanesque chapel in Bratislava I, Slovakia.
Saint James's Chapel is an underground chamber beneath Námeste SNP square with a circular structure dating from the 11th century. It displays Romanesque features including stone vaults and was constructed using sandstone imported from Austria.
The structure originated in the 11th century as a chapel and was initially dedicated to Saint Lawrence. It was later rebuilt in Romanesque style and rededicated to Saint James.
For hundreds of years, this chapel served as a place for worship and burials in the city center. Visitors today can sense how the space was used by people across different periods.
Access is limited and available only through organized visits held a few times per year. Visitors should check ahead since numbers are restricted and advance booking may be required.
The building underwent several construction phases with the original stone structure designed as a rotunda. This layered construction makes it a rare example of how medieval building techniques evolved over time in one location.
