Obchodní dům Dunaj

Obchodní dům Dunaj is a six-story functionalist building in Bratislava featuring horizontal window bands and green ceramic tiles across its modern geometric facade. The structure has two basement levels, a double-flight staircase, two elevators, and three display windows that light up the ground floor retail spaces.

Architect Christian Ludwig designed this building between 1935 and 1936 as Slovakia's first modern retail establishment, originally called Obchodný dom Brouk a Babka. It received national cultural monument status in 2000, securing its place as a key example of Slovak functionalist architecture.

The interior once displayed goods across different floors, each section organized to guide shoppers through a carefully planned retail journey. This arrangement reflected modern thinking about how people should move and shop in cities during the 1930s.

The building sits directly on the square and is easy to spot from the street, with large display windows that give a clear view of the interior. The double staircase and elevators make it straightforward to explore the different floors.

The building incorporates Thermolux glazing technology and a linear neon lighting system that outlines its asymmetrical facade at night. This lighting approach was a remarkable innovation for a retail center in the 1930s.
