Chałubińského brána, Mountain saddle in High Tatras, Slovakia.
Chałubińskiego brána is a mountain pass in the High Tatras located between Dolina Rybiego Potoku valley and the upper section of Dolina Ciemnosmreczyńska valley at approximately 2,020 meters elevation. The saddle sits on a ridge that forms a natural crossing point between distinctly different terrain on either side.
The pass was named in 1889 by Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski to honor Tytus Chałubiński, replacing the earlier name Zawracik. This renaming reflected efforts to recognize the contributions of notable mountaineers to the exploration and mapping of the Tatras.
The saddle marks a significant crossing point between Polish and Slovak territories, featuring distinct hiking paths developed by mountaineering communities.
The ascent from Morskie Oko shelter takes about two hours and fifteen minutes, with the final stretch requiring careful footing on loose stone. Wearing sturdy boots and allowing extra time for cautious steps will help you navigate this section safely.
The area supports rare alpine plant species including tatrzańska grass, Dziurawska saxifrage, and Carpathian buttercup, which thrive in the harsh conditions of high elevation. Spotting these adapted plants during your crossing offers a glimpse into the fragile ecosystem that exists above the treeline.
