Kamenica Castle, Gothic castle ruin in Kamenica, Slovakia.
Kamenica Castle is a ruin with Gothic architectural elements located on a hilltop in eastern Slovakia. The surviving wall fragments and floor plans reveal the layout of a medieval fortified structure with distinct defensive and residential sections.
The castle was built in the early 13th century as a defensive post guarding a major trade route. It survived multiple attacks over the centuries until a final assault in 1556 left it in ruins.
The castle grounds reveal how medieval families managed property and power from this hilltop position. The layout of surviving stone work shows where daily activities once happened in a feudal household.
The ruins are freely accessible year-round without entrance fees. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear since loose stonework and uneven terrain require careful footing.
Rather than left to decay, the castle stones were removed in 1816 and repurposed to build a brewery in nearby Lúčka. This means parts of the medieval structure were given a second life in a completely different setting.
