Hanigovce Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Hanigovce, Slovakia.
Hanigovce Castle is a medieval fortress ruin situated on a strategically positioned hill overlooking the Presov countryside. The structure displays Gothic architectural features with stone walls and fortification systems that define the site.
The fortress began as a wooden construction around 1300 and received authorization to transform into a stone castle in 1342 under local noble leadership. This shift represents the move from temporary to permanent defensive structures during the medieval period.
The castle, known locally as Neuburg, shows how medieval inhabitants built fortified structures for protection and control. The stone walls and defensive features visible today reflect the construction approaches and defensive thinking of that period.
The ruins are accessible via marked hiking trails, with the green route from Hanigovce covering approximately 4 kilometers and the yellow route from Lutina approximately 3 kilometers. Sturdy footwear and adequate time are needed to safely navigate the uneven terrain.
The ruins are maintained today by the civic association Novum Castrum, which actively works on restoring gates and sections of defensive walls and buildings. These ongoing efforts allow visitors to explore the preserved structures and witness the restoration progress happening on site.
