Borgo Maggiore, Market municipality at Monte Titano slopes, San Marino
Borgo Maggiore is a municipality spread across the slopes of Monte Titano at around 525 meters elevation, forming one of San Marino's major settlements. The territory is divided into six distinct hamlets that together create this sprawling mountain community.
The area was originally called Mercatale in the 12th century, named for its important markets that served the surrounding region. It received its current name in 1879 when it was recognized as the largest settlement after San Marino City.
The Palio di Don Bosco in September brings together the six hamlets in traditional cart races and pole climbing events that reflect local pride and community bonds. Visitors can watch these competitions that connect the different parts of the municipality.
The municipality connects to San Marino City through a cable car system that runs regularly with short travel times between the two places. This connection makes visiting the hamlets straightforward for those based in the capital.
This territory holds San Marino's only heliport and the State Hospital in Cailungo serving the entire republic. The area also provided temporary shelter to Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1849 during his journey across Italy.
