Cercles de pierres de Wanar, Stone circle complex in Kaolack, Senegal

The Wanar complex consists of 21 circular stone formations, with each circle containing 10 carved laterite pillars measuring 2 meters in height.

The megalithic site, constructed between 300 BC and 1600 AD, represents ancient burial traditions and architectural expertise of early Senegambian civilizations.

The stone circles at Wanar contain distinctive lyre-shaped frontal stones and demonstrate sophisticated construction techniques used by the Serer people.

The archaeological site covers 2.17 hectares of land, with a laterite quarry located 200 meters northwest of the main stone formations.

Sixteen of the stone pillars feature bifid shapes, while others display trapezoidal cross-sections, marking specific architectural patterns unique to this location.
