The Syrian Civil War is an ongoing multi-sided civil war in Syria fought between the Ba'athist Syrian Arab Republic led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, along with domestic and foreign allies, and various domestic and foreign forces opposing both the Syrian government and each other.
This conflict began as a chain of peaceful protests for democracy in March 2011 and escalated into a full-scale civil war by the end of July 2012 after the Syrian army officially announced that they were fighting against an insurgency.
The war has caused major destruction to cultural sites, and significant damage to others.
As of March 2021, the UN estimates some 13.4 million people in Syria require humanitarian assistance.
It marks one of the longest civil wars in modern history and has been marked by human rights abuses including systematic torture of prisoners, and widespread executions.
