Mayo-Kebbi Est Region, Administrative region in southern Chad
Mayo-Kebbi Est is an administrative region in southern Chad comprising four departments with varied landscapes across its territory. The area stretches from Lake Fianga's shores toward neighboring Tandjilé Region and is shaped by its natural features and local centers.
This region formed when Chad reorganized its administrative boundaries, bringing together portions of the former Mayo-Kebbi prefecture into a new territorial unit. Bongor became its administrative center following this territorial restructuring.
The region is home to multiple ethnic communities including Bagirmi, Kanuri, and Masa people who maintain distinct traditions and ways of life. Walking through villages and markets, you will notice this diversity reflected in local customs, languages spoken, and daily practices.
The region operates through several local administrative centers including Bongor, Gounou Gaya, Guélengdeng, and Fianga that serve as contact points for various services. Keep in mind that travel conditions between communities can change depending on the season and weather patterns.
The region features two major lakes, Fianga and Tikem, which form natural water boundaries with Cameroon along the border. These bodies of water sustain fishing communities whose daily work and livelihood depend entirely on these natural resources.
