Mayo-Kebbi Est Region, Administrative region in southern Chad
Mayo-Kebbi Est is an administrative region in southern Chad, made up of four departments and sharing a border with Cameroon to the west. Its capital, Bongor, sits on the bank of the Logone River and serves as the main hub for the region's administration and trade.
The region was created in 2008 when Chad divided the former Mayo-Kebbi prefecture into two separate regions as part of a broader administrative reform. Mayo-Kebbi Est took shape as the eastern part of that former territory.
The Masa people, who live mainly along the Logone River, are known for a traditional wrestling practice that remains part of local celebrations today. At village markets, the variety of languages spoken and the different styles of dress reflect how many distinct communities share this land.
Bongor is the best starting point for exploring the region and has the basic services that travelers need. Road conditions can vary a great deal depending on the season, as rainfall during the wet months can make some routes hard to pass.
The name of the region comes from the Mayo-Kebbi River, whose name simply means 'small river' in the local language. That river feeds into the Logone, which forms part of the natural boundary between Chad and Cameroon.
