Thoen is an administrative district in Lampang province containing eight subdistricts spread across mountainous terrain between the Khun Tan Range and Phi Pan Nam Mountains. The region sits at approximately 707 meters elevation and covers around 1,634 square kilometers.
The district received its current name in 1938 following administrative reforms that restricted the Mueang designation to provincial capitals only. This renaming was part of a nationwide reorganization to standardize local administrative structures.
Wat Wiang temple displays northern Thai Lanna architecture with distinctive features from the Chiang Saen period. The temple still reflects the religious and artistic traditions that people have maintained in this region over centuries.
The district operates through two subdistrict municipalities and six tambon administrative organizations serving approximately 61,694 residents. Visitors will find a network of local administrative offices providing information and basic services across the area.
