Trakan Phuet Phon covers 1,306 square kilometers in northern Ubon Ratchathani province, with 23 sub-districts containing 235 villages across its territory.
The district evolved from Mueang Phana Nikhon, changed its name to Khulu in 1917, then to Phana Nikhom in 1939, before receiving its current name in 1940.
The name Trakan Phuet Phon derives from Thai language meaning beautiful crops, reflecting the agricultural heritage of this northeastern region.
The district maintains 22 tambon administrative organizations and one sub-district municipality that manages parts of Kham Charoen and the entire Khulu area.
The district borders eight other administrative regions, including six from Ubon Ratchathani Province and two from Amnat Charoen Province.
