Bangkok Aquarium, Public aquarium in Lat Yao, Thailand.
Bangkok Aquarium is a public aquarium located on the campus of Kasetsart University in the Lat Yao district of Bangkok, displaying freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles in recreated natural habitats. The tanks are organized around the different aquatic ecosystems found across Thailand and Southeast Asia.
The aquarium was founded in 1940, making it one of the oldest facilities in Bangkok focused on freshwater life. It grew out of the early work of Kasetsart University, which had just been established, and was used from the start as a teaching resource.
The aquarium sits within the campus of Kasetsart University, which explains why many visitors are students or school groups. The displays are built around learning rather than entertainment, and the space feels closer to a research center than a theme park.
The aquarium is set inside an active university campus, so it is worth locating the entrance in advance as it is not always easy to spot. Visitors with a foreign passport typically pay a higher admission rate than Thai residents.
Unlike most aquariums in the region, this one focuses entirely on freshwater species rather than marine life. Some of the fish on display are found only in Thai rivers and are rarely seen outside of specialist collections.
