Hua Hin, Administrative district with coastal resorts in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand
Hua Hin is a coastal administrative district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province in southern Thailand. The district stretches from the Gulf of Thailand inland to forested mountains in the west, taking in several beaches, fishing villages and smaller settlements along the shoreline.
The area began as a small fishing settlement and became a royal retreat in the 1920s after the railway made access to the beach easier. The first beachside hotel soon drew visitors from the capital seeking to escape urban life.
The name comes from a white rock on the beach that sailors once used as a landmark. Today locals and visitors gather at the night markets, where fresh fish is grilled and regional dishes are served along the waterfront promenade.
The area is best explored by train or rented vehicle, as locations within the district are spread far apart. Plan extra time for trips along the coast or to the temples in the mountain areas.
Old wooden pilings stand in the water along the shore, remnants of landing piers that predate the modern harbor facilities. In the early morning small fishing boats return here and sell their catch straight from the vessel to waiting buyers on the waterfront.
