Daraphirom Palace, House museum in Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Daraphirom Palace is a house museum in Mae Rim, a district north of Chiang Mai, housed in a raised wooden building set on concrete supports. The structure features two grand staircases, a rooftop level, and extensive grounds that are part of the visit.
The palace was built in 1913 as a home for Princess Dara Rasmi after she returned to Chiang Mai following the death of King Chulalongkorn. It was her first settled residence in the north after decades spent at the Bangkok court.
The palace is named after Princess Dara Rasmi, a daughter of the last ruler of Chiang Mai who spent years at the Bangkok court before returning north. Inside, personal belongings and furnishings show how she organized her daily life in this region.
The site sits inside a border patrol police camp near Route 107, north of Chiang Mai, and is open to visitors. Paths run through the buildings and grounds, making it easy to move around and take in the different parts of the property.
The grounds contain experimental plots where the princess worked on farming techniques to help local northern Thai growers. These garden areas are still visible today and show a side of her life that goes well beyond her role as a royal resident.
